Post-Baccalaureate Research Assistant Lab Co-Manager
I am an alumni of San Diego State University. I plan to attend graduate school and pursue a career as a researcher in experimental social psychology. My interests in the field broadly include; social influence counter-measures, nonverbal communications, human-animal relations, prejudice, and discrimination and diversity. Initially, I joined the STEPP lab to cultivate experience and exposure to the environment that I may expect to see in graduate school. I have been successful in this regard; data analysis, literature reviews, time constraint, brainstorming, drafting abstracts, being stone-walled by data and interaction with lab directors, graduate students, and other research assistants, has been a invaluable experience. However, my primary motivator for choosing to be in the STEPP lab is due to the research being conducted. Hispanic women’s underrepresentation in the STEM fields is an important issue to be addressed. Exploring why this underrepresentation occurs, and how to counter-act it, is fundamental not only for Hispanic women, but for all minorities. On a personal level, family members have been subject to many situations in which they believed they could not succeed in the STEM field and have avoided it. This research is important, to the members of my ethnicity and to the women of my family now and in the future. Participation in conducting this research is a privilege, and I look forward to continuing to do so whilst preparing for graduate school.
